The French actor Jean-Paul Belmondowho died on 6 September 2021 at the age of 88, after having lived a great film career, was a great car enthusiast. Favored by the earnings deserved along many box office successes, Belmondo had a passion for sports cars. A few months after the last farewell to the great actor, there will be an event that will remember this unbridled passion.
There are many films in which we have been able to see Jean-Paul Belmondo at the wheel of countless cars of great visual impact. In real life as on screen, ‘Bebel’ collected and loved them. This year, to pay homage to this movie star, on 24 and 25 September at the Richard Mille Chantilly Arts & Elegance Concours there will be an exhibition dedicated to the cars that belonged to him and to the legendary ones of his films. Tickets are already available: an opportunity also to see Chantilly and the Oise department.
Jean-Paul Belmondo has entertained several generations of spectators with scenes, stunts and chases that have become iconic. Several models are related to his filmography such as the impressive Matra MS630 in Ho! or the superb Lorraine-Dietrich in Borsalino where we find the Belmondo-Delon duo as thugs. In Love is a Funny Thing, we remember the lovers, Françoise (Annie Girardot) and Henri (Jean-Paul Belmondo) at the wheel of the Mercury Marquis Convertible on their American journey (cover image).
In front of and behind the camera, Jean-Paul has satisfied his passion for beautiful cars. With a flair for Italian cars, it is good to remember. Throughout his life he bought and used several Ferraris (250 TdF, 250 California, 308 GTS, Dino 246GT). He also had a crush on the DB5 Aston Martin, as he had two, one gray and the other burgundy. The actor also owned a Maserati Ghibli Spider, an AC Bristol, a Daimler SP250, a Peugeot 403 Cabriolet, a Renault-Alpine Gordini and a Panther Lima.
According to an interview with Car Life in 2013, Jean-Paul Belmondo said: “I loved all the cars I drove to the cinema. But I have also personally had beautiful ones. Let’s say it’s true that Ferraris are my favorites. California was beautiful, but the 250 GT Tour de France was even more wonderful, considering how tough it was in the gears. I have two Aston Martin DB5s, which I love so much“.
