The boys had climbed onto the structure, which ended up giving way
An 18-year-old boy died and two others were injured early Monday morning as a result of an accident on El Mojón beach, in the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar.
According to the Emergency Coordination Center, the young people had climbed onto a surveillance post, which ended up collapsing due to the weight. In its fall, the infrastructure hit the boys.
Members of the Civil Protection, Local Police of San Pedro del Pinatar and Civil Guard moved to the place. In addition, the Management of Urgencies and Health Emergencies 061 sent two ambulances, whose staff could only certify the death of the 18-year-old, who suffered a strong impact on the head. The other two injured, a boy and a girl of the same age, were transferred with minor injuries to the Los Arcos del Mar Menor hospital.
The San Pedro del Pinatar City Council assured that the watchtower was “in perfect condition” and that days before the beach had passed the certifications to accredit the blue flag. In addition, municipal sources stressed that the tower’s anchors were recent and a lifeguard had been to the facilities hours before without noticing any problem with the structure.
