Luni – Always current and evocative, in an unstoppable ride through the centuries of art, Sophocles’ tragedy will be staged “Aiace” directed by Sergio Maifredi ,: in national preview Monday 27 June 2022 in the Luni amphitheater, first appointment of the seventh Portus Lunae Art Festival.
The review continues in the archaeological area of Luni, in the province of La Spezia, until 2 August with two other shows dedicated to the theme “Il furore”.
“Aiace”, produced by the Ligurian Public Theater and Star – Ancient Roman Theater System, narrates the rebellion of a great warrior to the injustice of those who do not recognize the greatest honor, that of arms.
It is the first Greek tragedy directed by Sergio Maifredi, a great lover of classicism from over ten years at the center of his most important projects, from Odyssey to Iliad and Aeneid conceived as Mediterranean tales.
The “Portus Lunae Art Festival” is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture – Regional Directorate for Museums of Liguria, the National Archaeological Museum and archaeological area of Luni, the Municipality of Luni and the Liguria Region. it’s free while the ticket for the entrance to the amphitheater is 1 euro with the full ticket and 0.50 euro with the reduced ticket.

The collection of the booked tickets will be possible at the same times at the ticket office of the Amphitheater or alternatively 1 hour before the show.
The national preview of “Ajax” features three actors to cover all roles. As it was in the beginning of the Greek tragedy. Plus one for the choir voice. This is a “Ajax in a box”. Sophocles’ tragedy brings about the end of the heroic age that gives way to the logic of compromise, therefore of politics.
The weapons of Achilles, according to the rules of honor of the war, were to go to the most valiant among the Achaeans, Ajax. But to get them, thanks to his rhetorical ability, it is Ulysses. An injustice which leads to thoughts of revenge, soon transformed into action.
The staging makes use of and the literary advice of Giorgio Ieranòfull professor of Greek literature at the University of Trento, considered by Maifredi “a real coach” who, together with the translation of Maria Grazia Cianiformer professor of History of the Classical Tradition at the University of Padua, made him enter the powerful world of Sophocles.
All the characters are played by Corrado d’Elia (Ajax and Teucer), Alberto Giusta (Athena, Messaggero, Agamemnon, Menelao), Andrea Nicolini (Odysseus, Tecmessa) and Marco Rivolta (the choir), directed by Sergio Maifredi, actors and travel companions who gave body and voice to his thoughts.
The double and triple roles that the interpreters take on, highlight short circuits between the characters: Teucer is also Ajax; the two heroes brothers are indissoluble, superimposable. How are they Agamemnon and Menelaus. Odysseus has the same voice, the same face as Tecmessa, Ajax’s woman. He hates Ajax but is capable of compassion for Ajax, like Tecmessa.
The original music composed by Mario Incudine with the collaboration of Antonio Vasta and performed live by Giorgio Rizzo, they are the real chorus of this essential tragedy.
The tragedy is suspended in a present time, in which everyone can search for the meaning of a history of arms, honor, justice and memory, themes present in every battle.
The Festival continues on Tuesday 19 July with Maddalena Crippa protagonist of “Armida” and Tuesday 2 August with David Riondino in “Astolfo sulla luna”.
