The trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp is costly to the actress: the jury demands $13 million for Depp. But he might not even get a tenth of that.
FAIRFAX – Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have been bickering in Fairfax, Virginia for the past few weeks over sums that seem far removed from everyday life. While Depp demanded around $50 million from Heard, the actress countered with a $100 million lawsuit against her ex-husband. On June 1st, 2022, the verdict was reached in the spectacular trial. Amber Heard could possibly get into big financial trouble with the decision, which was basically a dork.
Amber Heard: She should pay Johnny Depp 13 million US dollars – but the legal situation prevents that
Not only since Hollywood classics like “The Twelve Angry Men” is known: Due to the jury system, a legal dispute in the USA focuses on significantly different aspects than is the case in this country, for example. It is not without reason that bizarre body language and touching anecdotes found their way into the trial so frequently that in many places there was a cry that instead of being a court case, it was a grotesque staging in order to win over the jury and the public.
Apart from the question of justice and truth, which is decisive in itself, Depp established himself as the audience’s favorite and, if you take the judgment as a basis, seems to have convinced the jury of his view of things. Although the latter awarded claims to both parties, while Depp was to receive 15 million US dollars from Heard, Heard was only granted 2 million US dollars instead of the 100 claimed. However, the remaining $13 million that Heard would have to give to Depp does not comply with Virginia law.
The claim that Heard Depp is supposed to pay against is divided into compensatory damages ($10 million) and punitive damages ($5 million). While the former sum is intended to compensate for the losses that Depp suffered from Heard, the latter serves to punish the actress’ behavior. However, in Virginia there is an upper limit of 350,000 US dollars for these “punitive” damages. Thus, the amount that the jury awarded Depp – after completely forgetting to enter it – melts down to $ 10.35 million.
Johnny Depp: According to the verdict, Heard owes him millions – but Depp may go away almost empty-handed
But $10.35 million is also a devastating sum – not just for the average earner, but arguably for Amber Heard as well. Like the American news channel CBS News reports, it is said to be questionable whether the actress, whose leading role in the “Aquaman” films was almost axed, can raise the millions, which, minus her own claims, still amounts to $8.35 million. Already at the trial, Kathryn Arnold, an entertainment industry specialist, estimated that the negative publicity surrounding the lawsuit with Depp Heard as an actress had cost her around $50 million in market value. Hollywood “likes her work, but they can’t work with her because every time her name is mentioned, the negativity boils up again.” Newsweek the expert. Heard himself said he already had $6 million in legal fees to pay.
Although Heard could appeal against the verdict; as lawyer Sandra Spurgeon pointed out, in this case the actress would have to post the amount in question, including interest, as bail. Spurgeon told Spurgeon that there could be a “real problem” for Heard if Depp wants the sentence to be enforced CBS MoneyWatch.
So if Heard doesn’t want to see her future salaries seized, she only has two options. One would be to file for bankruptcy. This would eliminate the $10 million in damages; Heard would be officially bankrupt, and she would still owe Depp $350,000. The other option would be to ask her ex-husband for charity. Depp can waive the millions at any time, even partially. Although the actor repeatedly asserted in the court proceedings that he was only concerned with finding the truth – but asking Depp for debt relief would probably be an extremely difficult task for Heard. In her statement on the outcome of the trial, the actress did not address the financial side of the verdict – it remains to be seen whether she will raise the sum. (askl)
