Federal deputy Amália Barros (PL) was buried at 11 am this Monday, 13th, in Mogi Mirim/SP, the parliamentarian’s hometown. Present at the ceremony, among other politicians, were Michelle Bolsonaro, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and federal deputies Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and Abilio Brunini (PL -MT).
Michele Bolsonaro and Amália were friends and, together, they ran PL Mulher with the positions of president and vice-president, respectively. Their relationship became known after Michelle asked Amália to remove her ocular prosthesis during a PL Mulher event in João Pessoa/PB in July 2023. In recent days, the former first lady had been sharing her desire for Amália to get better and asking for prayers for her. At a party event in Aracaju/SE that Michelle participated in after the deputy underwent pancreas surgery, she asked people to intercede for her friend.
“Our deputy Amália Barros, our vice-president, underwent pancreas surgery and is in serious condition. And her pain is our pain. And it’s been very difficult to be here today”, says Michelle.
On his social network X (formerly Twitter), Abilio Brunini also asked his followers to intercede for Amália. The video was taken on Saturday, the day before the deputy’s death.
After the official announcement of Amália’s death on Sunday, 12th, Arthur Lira, Eduardo Bolsonaro and Nikolas Ferreira shared their tributes. Lira reports in her X account that the deputy worked tirelessly to classify monocular vision as a sensory disability.
The case concerns Law 14,126/21, proposed by Amália which, by classifying “monocular vision as a sensory disability, extends the same rights and benefits provided for people with disabilities. A unique achievement for the segment”, says Lira. Still in 2021, Amália founded the National Institute for People with Monocular Vision. Initially eponymous with its name, the foundation provides social assistance to monoculars and prosthetics.
Eduardo Bolsonaro paid tribute to the parliamentarian on the social network Maybe because you’re so young, sweet and polite, you never think it could happen like that. Still 39 years old, he leaves behind a law bearing his name in favor of the disabled, as well as an institute to care for them. It will certainly not be forgotten. May God comfort her husband Thiago Boava, family and friends at this difficult time.”
Nikolas Ferreira, in turn, said “it doesn’t seem true”. “I keep feeling that I will arrive at the chamber, you will greet me with a smile, as you always do, and this will be nothing more than a bad dream. But unfortunately it is not… How much you will be missed by everyone, Amália… May the Lord comfort the life of your family. A warrior is gone.”
Who was Amália Barros?
Born March 22, 1985 in Mogi Mirim, a city in the interior of São Paulo, Amália Barros graduated in journalism and worked at Grupo Bandeirantes as a producer. At age 20, she had toxoplasmosis and lost an eye due to the infection. After what happened, she began to fight for the cause of monocular people, began her active political life in 2022 and was elected federal deputy for Mato Grosso do Sul, with 70,294 votes.
Amália had been hospitalized since May 1st to have a nodule removed from her pancreas, which she discovered after starting treatment to get pregnant. There were complications in the surgery, which worsened her health and led the parliamentarian to undergo several medical procedures. In the early hours of Sunday, the 12th, she did not survive and passed away at the age of 39.
