Aluminum factory Aldel in Delfzijl is on the verge of bankruptcy. The company has applied for a postponement of payment from the court, reporting, among other things, RTV North and NOS Monday. Increased energy prices are the main reason for the financial problems at the aluminum smelter, where production was already shut down at the beginning of September.
In recent weeks, Aldel has tried unsuccessfully to find external investors to cover the costs, NOS reports. The management also wrote a letter to the cabinet together with chemical company ESD-SIC from Farmsum in Groningen, asking for support in order to survive the energy crisis. Both companies use a lot of electricity in their production process.
According to RTV Noord, about twelve people are still working at the company. After production was shut down in September, 187 employees were laid off. Masja Zwart of the FNV trade union tells the regional broadcaster that she saw the application for deferral of payment coming: “Wages have to be paid while bills are still outstanding.”
According to the NOS, the court in Groningen has now granted a postponement of payment to the company. It is now up to a bankruptcy trustee to see if there are any takeover candidates. The board of Aldel would hope that bankruptcy can still be averted. Financial director Eric Wildschut could not be reached for comment on Monday evening.
