Toto Wolff called it a rule “Anti-embarrassment” when it was Honda that was forced to systematic power unit changes. The fact that the regulation is less rigid towards those who introduce new components repeatedly is helping Mercedes in the run-up to Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings. The Brackley team, in fact, this season has asked a lot from their power units, running into problems at thecrankshaft which oblige Mercedes to replace the thermal V6s – ICE – to avoid the risk of running into reliability problems in the race. From the fifth component onwards, however, ‘only’ five positions are paid on the starting grid and therefore both Bottas and Hamilton have already relegated by just five positions, the Finn in the United States and the seven-time world champion in Brazil.
Max Verstappen he defined “Illogical” these penalties are regressive rather than progressive as logic would suggest given that the rules are not systematically respected. This season Honda presented itself with the aim of complying with the dispute of the 22 scheduled races with the power units provided for by the regulations, and it would also have succeeded without what happened at the Copse at Silverstone on the occasion of the first lap of the Grand Prix of Great Britain. Mercedes, on the other hand, is using the regulation in its favor to put Hamilton in the best conditions to push the accelerator pedal without hesitation, creating video game comebacks like those shown in Brazil.
Fernando Alonso like Max Verstappen, he believes it is wrong that the regulation goes to meet those who constantly change components, even if when he was at the wheel of the Honda-powered McLaren the penalties were commonplace (in Belgium in 2015 there were 105). The Alpine driver pointed out that almost ‘free’ heat engine changes are an advantage for Mercedes right now: “Anyone who has passed a certain number of heat engines per year should be sent to the bottom of the grid”, the opinion of Alonso reported by the Spanish newspaper AS.
