The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who has not hidden his “complete happiness” for his upcoming fatherhood with his wife, Teresa Urquijo, has announced that he will take the full paternity leave, 20 weeks, not by imperative legal, “especially by conviction.”
At the ‘Madrid Breakfasts’, organized by Europa Press, the councilor said that a year ago, when he had not yet passed through the altar, he did not expect everything that was going to happen to him in his life, such as his future fatherhood. “It is complete happiness,” he assured.
Regarding his paternity leave, Almeida stressed that “in this City Council no one is essential, not even the mayor.” “My pride is that I am the head of a team, led by the vice mayor, Inma Sanz, a team that has shown that they do extraordinary work,” he stated.
«I already went on a honeymoon trip for two weeks and nothing happened. And now, when it’s time to take paternity leave, of course, I take it not only out of legal imperative but, above all, out of conviction. I believe that it is such a special and extraordinary moment in life that one should not miss a second,” he stressed.
He has also responded to the Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, who declared that now that he is going to be a father he may “think about his country.” «When you are calm, happy and serene like I am, I am indifferent to those comments. “If one were calm, serene and happy, one would not make those comments,” he replied.
