Europe has set out to be the world leader in electrification. The Old Continent has promoted norms and policies that make the electric car the only possible mobility system. In 2035, with some exceptions, you will not be able to buy a new car with a combustion engine. Although sales of electric cars have not yet finished tipping the balance, there is a European country that is showing that it is possible to change the way we move, Norway. Its capital, Oslo, has just implemented a new rule regarding public transport. Only electric taxis now circulate, although there are also exceptions.
It’s no secret that Norway has become the electric car capital of the world. The country has managed to transform its mobility plan in a few years and with great success, although there is a trick. Norway is one of the countries, the largest in Europe, with the largest oil reserves in the world. A great source of money The Government has known how to direct and apply correctly to transform the vehicle fleet based on subsidies and effective aid that have allowed its inhabitants to opt for the electric car. The low population density and its distribution have also favored them. Many of its inhabitants are lucky enough to be able to live in chalets or private homes where it is much easier to install a charging point.
Norway, the electric car paradise
Despite the geographical ‘facilities’ that Norway has, the good educational work of its rulers cannot be ignored. All the steps taken in recent years, supported by oil money, have allowed the national transportation network to change. Private drivers already enjoy emission-free mobility and now public organizations have to lead by example. Oslo, the capital, only allows electric taxis to circulate. The regulations were approved in 2019 and finally regulated in 2020. Then an adoption period was set that has already been completed.
As of November 1, 2024, the circulation of non-electric taxis was prohibited within the municipal area. The only exception applies to those taxis that have to go to the city to perform some service. The change has been made without drama or major complaints. The country has adopted the electric car as a natural and essential part of its existence. Norway serves as an example for the whole world. This summer, Shanghai assured that it plans to electrify its public transport fleet by 2027. Millions of taxis and buses will switch to electric format. Other European countries and cities, such as Madrid, subsidize the acquisition of CERO or ECO vehicles to perform public transport functions.
In Norway the change has not been so dramatic because electric registrations associated with the taxi service have been high for years. Last year, the penetration of electric vehicles in the national market was 88%slightly higher than the 82.4% of new vehicle registrations in general. In Bergen and Stavanger, all new taxis were electric by 2023. In Trondheim, the proportion of new taxis that were electric was 97%, while in the capital Oslo it was 90%. These figures come from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. It is estimated that in the country There are already more electric cars circulating than thermal ones.
