Thanks to the new Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Alfa Romeo car manufacturer has made its entrance in the age of electrification. In this sense, the new SUV has been announced as the model of Alfa Romeo’s metamorphosis: two levels of electrification available at launch, with the plug-in hybrid joining the standard hybrid. Alfa Romeo defines it as “The first step towards electrification of the range“, Which will reach its peak after 2025 when the range of the Biscione expands with the first 100% electric model.
Returning to the Tonale, we are facing an absolute exclusive debut: we are talking about the 160 HP Hybrid VGT engine, which accompanies the front-wheel drive and a new hybrid technology that includes the 1.5 petrol engine with variable geometry turbo supercharger combined with the Alfa Romeo TCT seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with P2 48 volt 15 kW and 55 Nm electric motor, capable of transmitting motion to the wheels even when the internal combustion engine is off. Efficiency is the watchword: the transmission allows you to start and move in zero-emission mode at low speeds, when parking and when sailing. At the base of the Hybrid range, however, Alfa Romeo offers the same electric motor and automatic transmission combined with a less powerful 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine, for an overall output reduced to 130 HP and 240 Nm of maximum torque.
As mentioned, the standard hybrid versions are accompanied by one plug-in hybrid, which thanks to its 275 HP of maximum power is confirmed as the most performing version offered in the range thanks to a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h consumable in 6.2 seconds. On this version of the new Tonale, the advanced hybrid system combines the 1.3 MultiAir turbo petrol engine of the Global Small Engine family that provides traction to the front wheels with an electric motor that works on the rear ones: the plug-in hybrid system is powered by it. a 15.5 kWh battery, which guarantees a zero-emission driving range of 80 kilometers in the city cycle and over 60 kilometers in the combined cycle. It can be fully recharged in 2.5 hours using the 7.4 kW quick charger.
There are many functions available with the hybrid solutions offered by Alfa Romeo: they range from “Silent Start“, Which makes it possible to start and leave the vehicle without starting the petrol engine, using the” EV “mode, at the”Energy Recovery“, Which recovers the energy that would otherwise be wasted while the car decelerates and when braking, passing through the”Boost & Load point shift“, Thanks to which it is possible to increase the torque at the wheels with the electric motor that supports the petrol engine and also to calibrate the driving or braking torque delivered by the electric motor, up to the function”Electric Drive“, Which allows the vehicle to travel using the electric motor while the petrol engine is switched off.
Final remarks on EV capabilities, four in total, available within the limits of the state of charge of the battery and the power request: these are the e-Creeping functions, which via an electric motor provides the cue normally available on cars with automatic transmission, with the vehicle speed that can vary between 0 km / h and that equivalent to the idle speed of the petrol engine in first gear or in reverse; e-Launch, which instead allows the vehicle to start with only the help of the electric motor; e-Queuing, which allows you to move around in congested traffic following a “stop & go” flow; and e-Parking, which ultimately simplifies parking maneuvers making them practical and silent.
