Charles’s race Leclerc in Monte Carlo it was a disaster, and not his fault. The short wall of Ferrari had great faults in not immediately marking Sergio Perez’s strategy and in stopping the Monegasque twice, to mount first the intermediates and then the soft ones, making him lose precious seconds in the second pit stop. But the Maranello garage does not bear all the responsibilities of fourth place, which was ominous in light of the double win in qualifying. A part, albeit a smaller one, is also to blame for Alex Albon. Switching to slick tires during lap 20, the Thai slowed the Ferrari driver from lapped for a whole lap, who at that point – already second behind Sergio Perez – lost precious time also for the podium.
Leclerc joined Albon on the stretch of track that leads from Massenet to the Casino. In fact, Albon ignored the blue flags until the Santa Devota of the next round. Thus explaining his behavior: “We went out with the slick e we had a huge advantage on the pace. But it took three corners to let it pass, and then I would be quick enough to overtake it again. In my opinion, it would have been better for both of us if I had stayed in front, because I would have detached from him practically immediately“, Said the Williams driver after the race, who nevertheless did not detach Leclerc at all in the outlap, despite the fact that he had the soft tire and the Monegasque was lapping with the intermediates. And, moreover, he only let Leclerc pass for a block in the first corner. Ferrari asked the FIA why they failed to sanction Albon and Nicholas Latifi (who instead slowed down Carlos Sainz). The Williams may not have been the main cause of Maranello’s defeat in Monte Carlo, but they did have their weight. Not taking this into account, at Ferrari, would mean increasing the climate of negativity.
