The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, called on Monday evening to assume the national responsibility for preserving Iraqi blood.
Al-Kazemi said, in a tweet on his account on the social networking site “Twitter”: “I value Al-Sadr’s call to stop the violence, as well as the call of Hadi Al-Amiri and all those who contributed to the calm and preventing further violence.”
The government’s Green Zone in central Baghdad and a number of areas in some provinces are witnessing armed clashes, despite the application of curfew measures and reports of casualties.
Al-Kazemi stressed, in a press statement, that “the use of bullets and shooting at demonstrators by any security, military, or armed party is strictly prohibited, and the ministries, bodies, and security and military agencies are committed to work in accordance with the contexts, powers and controls granted to them.”
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces affirmed, “Our security forces are responsible for protecting the demonstrators, and that any violation of the security instructions in this regard will be subject to legal accountability, and citizens must abide by the security instructions and the curfew decision.”
The Iraqi government announced a nationwide curfew.
