The Organization of Consumers and Users compares these appliances
There are many ways to beat the heat during the summer, you can opt for a cold shower, have a cool drink or turn on some device to cool down your house. This opens a debate that appears every summer, what is the best way to cool your house? Many choose air conditioning and others opt for the fan. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has analyzed these two systems, comparing consumption, price or benefits to help citizens choose the best option.
Keep in mind that depending on the province you live in, it can be more or less hot. In terms of consumption, the monthly cost of an air conditioning unit will be double or triple that of a high-power fan, but it is possible to have an efficient air conditioning unit, which only involves a monthly consumption of about 25 euros, according to the OCU.
Fan and air conditioning
The OCU recommends that when choosing the type of device that most interests your home, you should look at its characteristics, benefits, price, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. The OCU has compared these characteristics of ceiling fans with air conditioning:
1. Ceiling fans. They are simple devices made up of an electric motor, of greater or lesser power depending on the size, and some blades. Some models work with alternating current (AC) and others with direct current (DC). The diameter of the fan must be adjusted to the space that you want to cool, the larger the room, the larger the fan should be. Some have a remote control and a winter function (reverse rotation to distribute heat). It is also common for them to carry a lamp to illuminate the room.
The advantages of these fans are that they: provide a uniform airflow; it is silent and spends less a large fan turning slowly, than a small one turning fast; highly recommended for large rooms; They usually carry a lamp to illuminate the room.
The drawbacks of these fans: they do not really cool the room; at high temperatures, the sensation of freshness is not usually noticeable; It should be placed near people to cool them down.
2. Air conditioning. Most of the installed air conditioning systems are heat pump systems. They manage to transfer heat from a fluid at a low temperature to another at a higher temperature, with which it is possible to transfer thermal energy efficiently from one place to another. The installation of this type of equipment is more expensive than that of a ceiling fan.
The advantages of installing air conditioning are: they can both cool and heat a room very efficiently; they usually have an ‘energy saving’ mode; It is a safe way to air-condition your home without having to leave the windows open.
The drawbacks of air conditioning are: it is a more expensive option; Must be permanently mounted to an exterior wall by a certified professional; If you live in a neighborhood community and need to install the outdoor unit on the outside walls, this must be previously authorized by the neighborhood council.
