Accidents | A cargo plane crashed in northern Greece – “There was ammunition on board”

According to media sources, the plane, which was on its way from Serbia to Jordan, had previously requested permission to make an emergency landing at the airport in the northern Greek city of Kavala.

There is no official information on the number of people on board. Public Radio of Greece according to ERT there would have been eight people on the plane.

ERT reports that the plane was owned by a Ukrainian company.

Eyewitnesses according to the plane was already on fire before it fell near the city of Kavala.

“I was surprised when I heard the sound of an airplane engine,” a local man told ERT.

“I went out and saw the engine was on fire.”

Local authorities according to the rescue personnel cannot go to the accident site due to continuous explosions. According to ERT, the plane’s cargo is “dangerous”.

“You must go further for your safety. We have information that there was ammunition on board the plane,” one of the firefighters present told reporters.

The mayor of a nearby municipality said in an interview with a Greek channel that the plane fell about two kilometers away from the settlement.
