Experts say this kind of exposure will allow Americans to better deal with infections and give healthcare facilities breathing room.
An estimated 73% of Americans are currently immune to the Omicron variant of Covid-19, according to a model from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, revealed this Friday. The organization further noted that the immunity rate could reach around 80% by mid-March.
Experts say this type of exposure will allow Americans to better deal with infections and give health care facilities breathing space after intensive care units have become overwhelmed in recent months.
“We’ve been exposed to this virus and we know how to deal with it,” said Ali Mokdad, a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. The United States has recorded nearly 80 million coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic, and that number is almost certainly an underestimate – around 931,000 people have died from the disease.
Despite immunity, the US still averages about 113,000 new cases a day, according to the New York Times. However, Mokdad said that even if cases rise again, deaths and hospitalizations will not increase. “I’m optimistic, even if we have an increase in the summer, cases will increase but hospitalizations and deaths will not,” he said.
