The Italian singer had a serious and difficult-to-treat lung tumor: now he is better and tells his experience
Two years of silence, darkness, reflections. The last image shared on social media dates back to April 2022. A month before that post, Luca Carboni had received a diagnosis that would radically change his perception of life: lung cancer. The singer-songwriter from Bologna chose to tell this battle in a touching interview. To Walter Veltroni for the Evening Courierreveals the pain, fear and hope that have characterized this difficult chapter of his life.
It all started with a cough that was resistant to medical treatment. That seemingly trivial symptom led to the shocking discovery of the tumor. For the first time, he began to consider the death as a “concrete possibility,” something he had never thought of.
At that time, Luca Carboni was immersed in the creation of a new albumwith ready-made pieces such as The ball And Rimini in summerand”, written for Vasco Rossi. But the diagnosis has upset every plan. The illness It forced him to put on hold not only his career, but his life.
“From choosing songs I moved on to choosing therapies to survive.”
The tumor, large and difficult to operate on, required a heavy chemotherapy. But, fortunately, the treatments worked. The tumor shrank, allowing him to undergo surgery in August 2022. After immunotherapyand today, two years later, he can say with relief:
“I am technically cured, although that word has a fragile meaning.”
Despite the moments of fear and painLuca Carboni has never let despair overcome him. He has dedicated the last months to his health, quitting smoking and taking long hikes immersed in the Apennines, to feel more deeply the vital breath of nature.
Today, Luca Carboni is ready to return. His return to the artistic world will take place in November, right in his hometown Bologna, with an exhibition curated by Luke Beatrice. The exhibition will include paintings, drawings, the storyboard of his first video and notes taken for each album, celebrating the forty years since his first album. It is a return that goes beyond music, celebrating his career in all the artistic forms he has explored.
There music remains the beating heart of his life. Luca intends to pick up the songs he was recording before the diagnosis, adding new ones, with the aim of returning to the stage. And he has already decided which will be the first song, highly symbolic, that he will perform live:
“Spring: it is an awaited season, which returns differently every time.”
Luca Carboni reflected on his most significant songs, such as Luca is at home sick, It takes a beastly physique And This life is beautiful even if sometimes it gets us downwhich express the strength to face difficulties without losing sight of the beauty of life. His desire is to inaugurate a tour in Bologna. He admits that he has never cried during his illness, but he knows that that moment will come soon with a liberating cry, the fruit of a new awareness.
