A plug-in hybrid convertible sounds like a special concept. That's because it is. Good news: one is coming!
Plug-in hybrids keep getting better. About 10 years ago you had a huge surplus of weight for an effective 10-15 km of electric range. Then you hardly benefit from the drivetrain, especially when you consider that the battery is no longer as effective 10 years later. Achieving 5-8 km with your first series Outlander is the highest achievable. Nowadays 50-100 km is very common.
We also find PHEV powertrains in many more types of cars. Not only in Outlanders, large Volvos and VWs anymore, but in everything. A plug-in hybrid convertible is now also available! It is now not the least, namely the Bentley Continental GTC!
Bentley Continental GTC facelift
Although the model looks timelessly beautiful, this four-seater has been on the market for a while (2018) and it is therefore high time for a facelift. Don't expect any shocking changes. Bentley is always very attentive with the facelifts. Just like with people, the same applies to cars: a subtle facelift is often more effective than a drastic one. Such an automotive Meg Ryan then misses its target.
A facelift is often the perfect time to adjust the technique and that is what will happen. The Bentley Continental GTC is becoming more and more environmentally friendly. The W12 has now been deleted and a hybrid variant is now being added. We think there is little chance that the chairman of Extinction Rebellion will block your street with such a hybrid Continental GTC, but it is a step in the right direction.
Not the first plug-in hybrid convertible
Initially there will be the powertrain that we already know from the Bentley Flying Spur: a 2.9 liter V6 and electric motor that together deliver 544 hp. The electric motor produces 136 hp (not coincidentally exactly 100 kW) and draws its power from an 18 kWh battery pack. There are also rumors about a plug-in hybrid convertible with V8, although the environment is slightly less important.
It is not very strange that Bentley adds these engine versions to the range. After all, the Porsche Panamera is already equipped with it and the Conti is on the same platform.
The category of plug-in hybrid convertibles is not yet very large. The first was the Porsche 918 Spyder, followed by the Ferrari SF-90 Spider. Then of course there is also an important competitor, the Mercedes-AMG SL63 E-Performance. It is not known when the facelift of the Bentley Continental GTC is planned. However, Bentley wants to electrify all cars by 2026.
