A projectile fired this Wednesday during an exercise on the maneuvering range Álvarez de Sotomayor, in Viator (Almería), has started a fire in the Canjorro area of Sierra Alhamilla, which members of the Infoca Plan of the Government of Andalusia are working to extinguish.
As sources from the Legion Brigade (Brileg) explained to Efe, around 8:30 a.m. the fire started due to a mortar projectile or anti-tank missile in the planned fall zone for the explosives, although the wind in the area has caused it to spread out of military installations.
They have clarified that although the maneuver field is located within the Álvarez de Sotomayor base, headquarters of the Brileg, it is independent and used by different unitsin this case by members of the Melilla Command, who are the ones carrying out maneuvers during these days.
Likewise, they have specified that the maneuvering field personnel have contacted the Emergency Operations Center (COE), which in turn has notified Infoca. Brileg has highlighted that the fire “is going down”as well as that it is already controlled and that the maneuvering field personnel remain on site, carrying out extinguishing work.
For its part, the Infoca Plan has communicated through its profile on the social network six groups of forest firefightersa member of the Specialized Forest Fire Brigade of the Andalusian Community (BRICA), three operations technicians, two Environmental agents, as well as two helicoptersone light and one heavy.
