At the Metropolitano Stadium, Atletico advanced with two goals in the first half, scored by Argentine Rodrigo De Paul and Brazilian Samuel Leno, then Borussia Dortmund responded with a goal in the second half, scored by Cote d'Ivoire substitute Sebastien Haller.
Dortmund had the most possession of the ball during the first half of the match, but Atletico greatly imposed its superiority on the offensive side and took advantage of its opponent's defensive errors to take a double lead before Dortmund began its offensive awakening in the final minutes of the half.
In the second half, Dortmund imposed its presence more, and seemed determined to reduce the gap to maintain its hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals in the tournament for the first time since 2013, which they actually succeeded in doing through Haller’s goal in the 81st minute.
Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Koppel also excelled in stopping more than one dangerous ball in the second half, preventing Atletico from achieving a bigger result.
The return match between the two teams will be held at Dortmund Stadium next Tuesday.
