Less than a hundred days before the start of the Paris Olympics competitions on July 26, high-ranking British officials revealed that the police in the United Kingdom will participate in supporting the efforts of their French counterparts in order to secure this huge sporting event, whose activities will continue until… August 11, with the participation of more than 200 countries.
The National Council of Police Chiefs in Britain announced that the support provided to France in this regard will include sending police officers, whether active duty or volunteers, in addition to dogs trained in search and inspection operations, with the aim of participating in the security operations that the French authorities are planning. Because up to 45,000 members of the police and gendarmerie forces are allocated to it.
While the Council indicated that the exact number of the British police support team to be sent to Paris has not yet been determined, security officials in London stressed that its members will assist French law enforcement agencies in a range of diverse tasks, whether related to security, coordination or communications.
These officials explained that the details of this team’s mission are being coordinated by specialized officers at the National Police Coordination Center in Britain, and are supported by the country’s Ministries of Interior, Defense, and Foreign Affairs, in addition to the Counter-Terrorism Police, and other parties that have not been disclosed.
For his part, Lawrence Taylor, who is responsible for protecting sporting events and pre-planned events at the National Council of Police Chiefs in the United Kingdom, confirmed that he hopes that British security personnel will play a major role in helping to make the Paris Games a success and preserving the safety of the fans who will be watching the competitions, in addition to benefiting from The opportunity afforded them by participating in the process of securing the Olympics, to hone their skills and experience.
As for the British Home Secretary, James Cleverly, he pointed out that the security cooperation between his country and France to ensure the security of the next Olympic cycle constitutes a continuation of the close relations that linked the two sides in this field, and included providing support to each other, in securing major sporting events before, including London Olympics 2012.
According to estimates published on the website of the “Police Professional” periodical concerned with the work of law enforcement agencies in Britain, half a million tickets to attend the Paris Games have been sold so far in the United Kingdom, amid expectations that movement between the British and French sides of the English Channel, also known as In the English Channel, increased movement over the eight weeks of the session.
