More than a hundred people from Rebellion or Extinction (XR), Scientific Rebellion (RC) and other social groups tried to demonstrate this Saturday in Arcelor-Mittal under the motto “Stop fossil subsidies: DANA starts here”.
Among its objectives was holding a popular assembly focused on degrowth in front of the Arcelor-Mittal facilities, the factory most polluting in Spain and among the ten steel factories with the highest emissions in Europe.
The heavy police deployment, however, forced the action to be changed to an assembly on the Arbeyal beach.
According to IMF data, the fossil fuel industry will receive at least 405.1 billion euros in the form of subsidies direct and indirect in the European Union, while spending on climate action only represents around a tenth of this amount.
