The Honduran authorities Alerts have been raised this Thursday following the formation of Tropical Storm Sara in the Caribbean, which is already affecting the Central American country with rains. In a statement, the Secretariat of National Risk and Contingency Management (Copeco) has raised four departments in the Caribbean to “red alert”, which were on “green alert” (preventive) since Tuesday.
The departments on “red alert” are Gracias a Dios, Colón, Atlántida and Islas de la Bahía. In addition, Copeco raises the departments of Cortés, bordering Guatemala, to “yellow alert”; Yoro and Olancho, adjacent to Nicaragua.
The civil protection organization has added the department of Santa Bárbara, bordering Guatemala, which was declared on “green alert.” The alerts will be valid for 72 hours starting at 12:00 local time this Thursday.
According to Copeco, Storm Sara “is located 180 kilometers east of Cape Gracias a Dios.” Likewise, the agency has ordered municipal authorities and state relief entities to maintain a “constant observation of any threats that could harm the population, especially vulnerable sectors.”
For people who live on the banks of rivers and areas vulnerable to landslides, landslides, subsidence, floods and other types of threats, Copeco has recommended taking preventive measures and not crossing fords, rivers and streams that have swollen as a result of the rains. Also, insurance work must continue of roofs and the cleaning of gutters and drains to avoid sudden urban flooding.
The General Directorate of the Merchant Navy and the Port Captaincies have been notified that apply prevention measures in boat navigationin accordance with their protocols for possible altered waves. Honduras is a country highly vulnerable to natural disasters.
