A human wave – 130,000 people according to the Government Delegation in the Valencian Community – took over the main streets and squares of the center of the city of Valencia this Saturday to protest the handling of the tragedy caused by damage and demand the resignation of the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazónand of his entire Council.
Eleven days after the floods that caused more than 200 fatalities and thousands of victims In the province, protesters have expressed their “rage” in the streets at the actions of the authorities.
Convened by 65 entities and organizations social, civic and left-wing unions of the Valencian Community and supported by 83 others, the march started at 6:10 p.m. from the Town Hall square and concluded about an hour and a half later in front of the Palau de la Generalitat.
The header has advanced very slowly through the center of the city until reaching its destination due to the crowd who occupied the route and who have barely been able to advance. Mud and paint have been thrown at the Palau de la Generalitaton whose walls several graffiti have also been made and a good part of the banners have been deposited.
During the march, there have been incessant shouts of “The president to Picassent” (in reference to the Valencia prison), “Mazón resigns, come out of hiding” or “the people united will never be defeated”, while people of all ages, some with tears in their eyes, have shown signs with phrases such as ” Let’s sweep Mazón like mud”, “Your incompetence kills”, and some voices have also been heard calling for the resignation of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.
One of the most exciting moments of the demonstration has been the arrival of the header to the Virgin Squarewhere the crowd that was waiting – because it had not been able to advance – burst into applause and one of the people holding the banner at the head shouted “They didn’t warn us in time, murderers.”
Finally, at 7:45 p.m. the headquarter reached the headquarters of the Valencian Government, in front of which muddy boots had been placed, and a respectful minute of silence for all the dead in the flood, at which time only the flight of the helicopter that was monitoring the protest was heard.
Below, three affected have read a manifesto -interrupted by applause and cries of ‘shame’-, in which it has been stated that on October 29 began “the worst episode in the history of political ignominy and human tragedies” of the Valencian Community, which is still duel.
They have also demanded the resignation of President Mazón, the ex officio initiation of the judicial procedure that determines and purges responsibilities for “the avoidable consequences of the catastrophe”, and the resignation of a Valencian Government “incompetent who has shown that he does not know how to rise to the occasion.”
They have accused the Generalitat of having “limited itself to trying to cover up the negligence in the face of this crisis” and condemned “without palliatives the inexplicable delay” in the arrival of emergency bodies to the affected areas due to the “lack of agility and coordination” between the regional and state Administration, which left the Valencian people “for five days abandoned to their fate” .
They have also criticized the State Government“which should have forcefully and immediately put pressure on the Valencian Government in the face of its inaction to intervene with all available troops and help citizens rebuild their lives.”
At the end of the reading, and when there were still people at the starting point of the demonstration, the ‘muixeranga’ was performed and the main banner was left in front of the Palau de la Generalitat.
The demonstration had been summoned by entities such as Acció Cultural del País Valencià, BEA, Ca Revolta, CNT València, Ciudad Puerto Commission, the coordinator of Democratic Memory, Escola Valenciana, Fampa València, Intersindical, Lambda and several neighborhood associations. EFE
