The session was chaired by the director, Santiago Muñoz Machado. Luis Mateo Díez, gave the inaugural lesson ‘Word and silence’
On the occasion of the opening of the 2024-2025 academic year, the RAE held an extraordinary public plenary session this Thursday at its headquarters in Madrid. It is the first time that this event is open to the public. It is done publicly.
The event showed the development and dynamics of a plenary session of the RAE, with all its liturgy. The session was chaired by the director of the RAE, Santiago Muñoz Machado. The academic and winner of the Cervantes Prize in 2023, Luis Mateo Díez, gave the inaugural lecture ‘Word and Silence’.
Weekly sessions
The Plenary Session of the RAE is made up of the permanent academics that make up the institution. It is the highest governing body of the Academy and is responsible for resolving all linguistic or literary, governmental, economic and any other matters. It holds its weekly sessions on Thursday afternoons, under the chairmanship of the director.
Previously, three extraordinary plenary sessions have been held outside the institutional headquarters: on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Constitution of Cádiz, in 2012 in the Andalusian city; in tribute to Miguel de Cervantes, in the La Mancha town of Argamasilla de Alba in 2015, coinciding with the fourth centenary of the publication of the second part of Don Quixote, and in Zaragoza in 2023, in an event in which the ancients were remembered directors of the institution Fernando Lázaro Carreter and Manuel Alvar, in the year of the centenary of their births.
The RAE postponed this extraordinary public meeting, scheduled for October 31, due to the serious events experienced in different areas of the national territory.
