These are days full of rumors (and when they are not, you will say) but specifically there is talk among the various ones of a new State of Playthe classic video game event from Sony Interactive Entertainment. In September it is almost a given, but until official confirmation we can do nothing but rely on the rumors, which point the finger towards the end of the month, sometimes speaking of September 20 and other times of September 24.
The date is almost secondary, what really matters now is what will be shown. While until recently we simply felt the need to have a clearer idea of what we can expect from PlayStation going forward, now it seems necessary to receive some reassurance that the company has something to ingratiate itself with the public after its most recent slip-ups.
Astro Bot teaches us that a good game is enough
Let’s start with Concord, the failed hero shooter that lasted a week before being shut down. Then, very recently, the announcement of the PS5 Pro – expected for months if not years – which turned out to be a very expensive console (especially if you need an optical drive, sold separately) and not all that interesting from a purely technological point of view (although this was expected).
In the middle there was Astro Bot, which warmed hearts and reminded that Sony’s forges can absolutely produce quality products that are worthy of fans’ money. Memes like the one above are an easy example of how fans are experiencing the situation. Astro Bot itself and the public’s reaction prove that in the end, a valid impactful video game can really be enough to unleash general excitement and change the feeling towards the company in a positive way.
The question clearly what is needed and what can actually be shown. One of the names that Sony could put forward to shift the public’s attention is a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Four years after the release of the first game, Sucker Punch could absolutely have at least a teaser trailer in its hands. Cory Barlog’s new project in Santa Monica is an unknown, but the name of the developer along with a very short teaser could be enough to give fans hope. The name of Naughty Dog would also help make many users scream with joy, but after years spent uselessly on a GaaS of The Last of Us abandoned before release we suspect there is nothing else ready to show. Or Bend Studio could finally pop up to tell us what its new IP is, after Days Gone, and maybe surprise everyone like Sucker Punch amazed with Ghost of Tsushima.
Tell usso if you feel like you’re disappointed with the current state of PlayStation, what are the games that would allow you to appreciate the direction of the Japanese company again?
