Another attack on health workers, punched in Manduria, once again in Puglia. The episode was reported by the Italian Society of System 118 (Sis118), which joins the voices of those calling for concrete interventions to stop this escalation of violence. Because despite the words of condemnation, the appeals and the measures adopted, says the president of Sis118 Mario Balzanelli, “we, all operators of the Territorial Emergency System 118, doctors, nurses, drivers-rescuers, protagonists on the front lines of the purposes and resources deployed by public health to protect life time-dependently, continue to take blind beatings, just as we serve the State and the entire population of the country”. What has been done and announced so far is not enough, in practice it is useless.
Here are the facts. “Manduria (Taranto), September 10, 4:00 am. The Taranto 118 operations center is activated”, reports Sis118. “A man is lying on the sidewalk, apparently unconscious. The 118 operations center immediately activates the rescue intervention. The ambulance arrives after a few minutes. The subject, a male of about 50 years old, who in that period of time had regained consciousness, immediately after getting into the ambulance, initially refused to be checked, not allowing the crew that intervened to detect his vital signs, to perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram, to determine the blood sugar level, and subsequently, suddenly, he attacked, with considerable impetus, the emergency driver, punching him in the face, and then the nurse, who collapsed to the ground unconscious after receiving three consecutive punches to the face, and then disappeared. The attacked operators sought treatment at the Emergency Room of the Manduria hospital”.
“The umpteenth brutal episode of aggression, suffered the other night by two operators of the Set 118 Department of the ASL of Taranto, guilty simply of taking care, with care and solicitude, of the subject for whom, in the middle of the night, the rescue intervention had been requested from the 118 Operations Center – comments Balzanelli – highlights, once again, the need to protect the operators of the Territorial Emergency System 118 who, precisely because they act on the front line, in the ‘open’ field, are the most defenseless and, not by chance, turn out to be, data in hand, the most attacked by users. Beyond the motivations, on which we have been producing, for years, very well documented analyses and counter-analyses – he observes – the objective fact remains that for those who work in 118 the vocational choice to honor their service to the community is identifying, every day more, with the high probability of getting hurt, and badly hurt, for the most part. absurd and even unpredictable violent, brutal attacks”.
“The most recent measures approved by the legislator, and those in the process of further approval at the parliamentary level, including the obligation for the competent authorities to proceed with the official complaint, as well as the toughening of the expected penalty profiles, which however we do not see translating into heavy sentences at the judicial level – Balzanelli points out – evidently do not find concrete space for effective application in everyday reality”.
“If the plural invocations aimed at enhancing prevention, ethics, spiritual educational action centered on the essential values of respect and the responsible conduct of proposed behavior are advanced as key remedies and thaumaturgical tools potentially capable of determining important changes to the plague, still very heavy to bear, of this continuous affliction”, insists the president Sis118, the fact remains that the 118 operators continue to be victims of a violence that is growing. “All this is unacceptable and must be drastically reduced, if not, improbably, cease altogether”, continues Balzanelli, expressing “full solidarity with the attacked operators”.
“Let’s proceed to impose the sanctions provided for – concludes the president of Sis118 – to ensure that the competent authorities apply the most intransigent law, which is now more clear than ever in these cases, and there is nothing else to do but apply it in any case, to further increase the protection of operators, finally recognizing, as Sis118 has been asking for many years, environmental risk compensation to those who continue to choose, with passion and love, to make our life ‘on the road’ in the service of others”.
