Never in recent history have we witnessed such a radical reversal of the conditions of peace and prosperity that have dominated the world scene since the end of the Second World War.
There are decades in which nothing at all happens; and there are days and weeks in which decades happen. We are in the midst of the second phase.
The President of the United States of America who withdraws from the race for the White House at the height of the election campaign for his second term. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The atrocious attack by Hamas against Israel on October 7 and the equally unspeakable repeated response by Netanyahu against Gaza, whose decimated population has suffered in silence and general inaction for over ten months. The inequalities that are increasing out of all proportion. Epochal events and phenomena of historical significance.
It is worth reflecting on these changes to understand that we are facing a new chapter in history: the beginning of a new geopolitical phase. Call it Chaos Landia or, if you prefer, the revenge of scholars and supporters of the doctrine of realism.
An anarchic world no longer harmoniously (so to speak) regulated by the supranational order but by global disorder. Where force, blackmail, armies and nuclear warheads return as protagonists, and no longer diplomacy.
The crazy and desperate race to rearm is proof of this. But so is the general return, by the government, to tending to their own garden, first and foremost, and the re-emergence of nationalist and sovereignist impulses – beyond the electoral results in individual countries.
A crippled European Union is bad for the world. The course taken by Brexit marks a path of no return. The idea that Europe can compete on the international stage without its closest ally, the USA, redraws its long-term ambitions and geopolitical boundaries.
The governance currently in charge of the EU finds itself in the midst of a cold war (fought by proxy) that sees the United States as the most fervent conservative of the status quo and China as the most active promoter of change.
It should be remembered that Russia, India, Turkey share the same sentiment as the Chinese in wanting, if not to overthrow, at least to redefine the perimeter of US supremacy in the world and the proverbial double standard on which America has staked much of its credibility.
The Chinese, for their part, enjoy a clean criminal record and see the phase we are going through as an opportunity for redemption. They have tried to show it on the African continent, intervening massively at their own pleasure, without however imposing a socio-economic model that would imply ousting leaders and heads of state, replacing them with characters they appreciate. Keeping Russia under their umbrella, with which flirting has become necessary in order to legitimize their aspiration to counter the USA in the world.
Although it is fascinating to frame this challenge only in the wake of the new global geopolitical disorder, the law will once again be dictated by the economic and social system that will emerge and that will shape our lives. That is to say: those recipes and policies (be they green-AI-cyber, etc.) aimed at supporting the backbone of the new world order of whoever will prevail in this contest, and who will try to influence, by force of circumstance, the geopolitical areas of crucial interest.
For this great war for global supremacy to determine a winner, we will of course have to wait for the White House election results next November. Or, alternatively, for the end of the war in Ukraine and the one in Gaza. The two things are not mutually exclusive, but whoever determines the beginning of a new era will also be the one who holds the reins of history.
It would be equally superfluous not to notice the profound lacerations that exist today in society, in every latitude of the world.
We therefore suggest that those who will govern the world take into account that the precariousness of these days only brings anger and continuous upheavals. No more divide and conquer in the name of extreme poverty and inequality, but a more equitable and just society will be the key to preventing those who are most excluded from asking questions and harboring resentment.
Finally, there remains the most important issue of all: climate change. The scorching summer and crazy temperatures, followed by sudden reversals and ferocious floods no longer predictable, make this world clearly unsustainable.
Our cities will soon become uninhabitable and we will have to invent a new way of life so that we can all live together. And this challenge, once again, will fall on the ruling class of this century, whose current inability to act will condemn it as the worst in history.
If it is true, therefore, that inaction is always worse than any other common sense action, we hope that those who govern the world will quickly make decisions for the collective good.
