US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday after the agency came under intense scrutiny for its failure to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally, media reports said.
The resignation comes a day after Cheatle, testifying before a congressional committee, acknowledged her agency’s failure when a person shot and wounded the Republican presidential candidate in an assassination attempt during a campaign event in Pennsylvania on July 13.
“We failed. As director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse,” Cheatle said in testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Monday.
Chittle has faced calls from Republicans to resign.
“The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 is the most significant Secret Service operational failure in decades,” Cheatle added.
