Ceferin warns Abodi: risk of UEFA exclusion from cups for Italian teams
Are Inter, Milan, Juventus, Bologna, Atalanta, Roma, Lazio and Fiorentina at risk of not being able to play in European competitions next season? “If the text remains as it is, we will have to exclude Italian teams from European competitions”, the words of the UEFA number one, Aleksander Ceferinwould have pronounced – according to La Repubblica – to the Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi during the meeting at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, on the occasion of Switzerland-Italy at Euro 2024.
The text in question is the Mulè amendment to the Sports and Education decree, which provides for total autonomy – statutory, regulatory, organizational and management – of the League from the FIGC. Giving Serie A the right to have a binding opinion on the FIGC resolutions that concern it and the possibility of appealing against the sports justice directly to the TAR of Lazio. According to the reconstruction of Repubblica, Ceferin defined this proposal as “unacceptable” and added that if the amendment were approved by the Commission of the Chamber, Italian teams would be excluded from the competitions with immediate effect.
Abodi would have promptly replied: “It no longer exists”, as if that text had disappeared. In these hours the amendment will be approved by the committee. The government assures, however, that it has undergone a “profound reformulation”. The points that must change for UEFA are the external recourse to sporting justice and the binding opinion of Serie A on FIGC resolutions. The first to be concerned are the Serie A clubs, so much so that the issue was discussed in the League at the last council. However, nobody imagined a threat of this magnitude from UEFA for an amendment that the clubs did not support.
