The #50 took over the baton from the #51
Marc Gené, Fernando Alonso and now also Miguel Molina: the 2024 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has extended the list of Spanish drivers capable of imprinting their name in the roll of honor of the legendary endurance race on the Circuit de la Sarthe. In fact, Molina shared the wheel of the Hypercar Ferrari 499P #50 with Antonio Fuoco and Nicklas Nielsen, who took over the baton from their team mates Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Calado, winners 12 months ago in the Centenary edition.
Reached by the Spanish newspaper Brand Marc Gene he did not hide the emotion and joy for a prestigious success: “It was a very tough race, finishing with 2% fuel was a heart attack – the words of the former driver now ambassador of the Prancing Horse – I’m very happy for Miguel Molina because he is a rider that the whole team loves. He hasn’t had an opportunity in F1, but F1 is a category where every year one driver makes his debut, or even zero as happened this year. He raced in the DTM which was a top championship for covered wheel racing and it doesn’t surprise me that he is proving to be a great driver at the wheel of a Hypercar because they are cars more suited to those like Miguel who grew up in the world of open wheels in ‘Formula’”.
According to Gené, Ferrari’s victory is worth double: “Already the victory in 2023 was incredible because no one usually manages to win on their debut. And this year, let’s not kid ourselves, we were penalized with the BOP. I don’t think Ferrari was the favorite for pure performance and I had the feeling that Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota, were maybe a little faster. But the whole race was very close, the difference between these four cars was minimal.”
