Today is celebrated World Oceans Day, a date that should generate greater interest and especially involve the entire society. We must remember that approximately 70 percent of the Earth’s water is salty, which is why it is necessary to get involved and look for ways to improve the oceans. According to data from the United Nations, In the last 150 years, approximately half of living corals have been lost. Plastic pollution in the oceans has multiplied by 10 since 1980 to date.
It is estimated that one third of fish populations are overexploited and that due to the high plastic pollution in the sea, many of these marine species have plastic in their organism. The theme for raising awareness in the oceans this year is “Awakening New Depths.”
With all the above information, it is necessary to reflect as a society and ask ourselves, what are we Sinaloans doing to protect or take care of our coasts? In Sinaloa there are approximately 656 kilometers of coastline, where various environmental groups have warned of the damage being done to the sea. To begin with, due to the pollution that can be caused by bad habits by using products in agriculture, aquaculture farms and society itself by throwing plastics into the sea.
If we think about overexploited species, there is shrimp, since some groups of fishermen do not respect the closed seasons and capture them when they must reproduce, as well as other species that, due to their high consumption demand, are fished even when it is not allowed. It’s time to act.
