Real Madrid’s victory in the Champions League for the 15th time in its history confirms the great Spanish supremacy on the European level, specifically in the 21st century, in which La Liga clubs won 36 out of 74 titles in the main European competitions.
This number is considered greater than the nearest competition by at least 20 titles, as the English Premier League comes second with 16 titles, while Italian clubs achieved seven titles and Germany six titles.
Of the 24 Champions League finals held this century, there were 11 Spanish victories, while Spanish teams won 12 of the 24 European League finals, in addition to achieving 13 European Super Cup titles.
It is noteworthy that Spanish clubs have won the last 19 Champions League final matches against competitors from other leagues, a series that extends to more than 20 years since 2001.
Spanish clubs achieved the 36 titles on the continent through six different clubs, and Real Madrid is the most crowned champion with 12 titles, followed by Sevilla with eight, Barcelona seven, Atletico Madrid six, Valencia two titles, and Villarreal one title. While three other Spanish clubs reached the final matches of European competitions at this time as well, namely Deportivo Alaves, Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao, and were content with runners-up.
Real Madrid is looking forward to increasing its lead when it competes in the European Super Cup this summer, against the Italian Atalanta, and if the “Blancos” win the title, it will be the sixth time in its history, setting the record for the number of times it has won this competition as well.
