British conductor Jan Latham-Koenig has been sentenced to conditional imprisonment for sexual crimes against a child.
The news agency AFP and the news media report on the verdict, among others Sky News. Latham-Koenig (b. 1953) was sentenced to one year and two months of suspended imprisonment in London on Tuesday.
The crimes were preparation of a sexual crime against a child and sexual communication with a minor. Latham-Koenig pleaded guilty to the acts.
The conductor was caught red-handed when he messaged an undercover police officer who pretended to be a 14-year-old boy. So no one was victimized in the Latham-Koenig case.
Latham-Koenig messaged the “boy” on the dating app. The conversation turned sexual and Latham-Koenig got the boy a train ticket to London for the meeting.
Meeting had agreed to the train station, where upon arrival Latham-Koenig was arrested in January.
The judge said the conductor’s actions were “deeply troubling” but gave him leniency because Latham-Koenig admitted his actions early on and his reputation and career have suffered.
According to her defense attorney, Latham-Koenig has sought therapy to correct her behavior.
Latham-Koenig has had a distinguished career in classical music.
In 2020, he received the title of OBE, or Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for his musical merits and for promoting cultural relations between Britain and Russia. He worked as chief conductor of the Novaya Opera in Moscow from 2011 to 2019 and has since been the main guest of the opera house.
Latham-Koenig has also worked in management positions in, for example, Porto, Palermo and Strasbourg. He has visited Finland to lead performances of the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 1999 and 2013–2014. He has also conducted the performances of the Tampere Philharmonic and the Tampere Opera in the 2010s.
