“One in 3 adults and 2 in 5 young people experience difficult situations, but in Italy there is a lack of psychologists in schools, in primary care, in local health authority services and in hospitals. There are 5 million Italians who do not have access to psychological help because they cannot pay out of pocket. Seven out of 10 young people do not receive the help they need, with serious repercussions on the present and future”. This is the alarm launched by the president of the National Council of the Order of Psychologists (CNOP), David Lazzari, at the opening of the conference ’35 years since the law of the psychological profession’, underway in Rome.
“Thirty-five years ago, after 21 parliamentary battles – recalls Lazzari – the psychological profession was finally regulated. A professional community that has grown in quantity, with over 130 thousand members, but also in trust towards the population, with +62% of requests in the private sector in recent years, and in the social image of a community which, however, today reports a situation of non-response and dangerous underestimation of the psychological needs of the population”.
Lazari, ‘the absence of a public psychological network blocks prevention, investments in this field save money’
For Lazzari, “the lack of a public psychological network prevents prevention, the early interception of problems and the promotion of resilience, with the result that situations worsen, with very heavy human, health and social costs. talks about a school psychologist and a basic psychologist, but the facts are slow to follow the many promises. The only private use of psychology makes it an asset reserved for those who can afford it and this is a short-sighted and classist vision that cannot be shared. “.
“Those who see psychology as a cost – he continues – should read up on the cost-benefit ratios that psychological interventions produce. The data on the psychological bonus, revealed by the PsyCare Project that we created with Cnop, speak clearly: in the face of 25 million allocated for the first bonus, savings of 312 million were produced in one year in the field of work alone. The psychological profession is a lively and central reality in the interests of the country and intends to fight for psychological needs to be recognized and have dignity in all fields. of human life”.
