Hamilton, the long goodbye
When Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari announced at the beginning of February that they had decided to join their paths from the 2025 season, Mercedes found itself – unexpectedly – in the situation of having to manage a driver who made the history of the team on his farewell step. Certainly the performances of the W15 – but also of Sir Lewis – are making the epilogue less bitter, but there is still talk of the end of the longest tenure of a single team by a Formula 1 driver.
Wolff downplays it
At the end of the disappointing Chinese run, Toto Wolff dedicated a discussion to Hamilton's farewell and his possible exclusion from technical meetings: “The role of the driver in the development of the car is always overestimated. Once a year we give input on the next development of the car and during the season there is simply feedback on the car's handling.”and continued: “From this point of view It's worse to lose an engineer who goes to another team after 12 months than a driver who changes team. There is no great loss of skills.”
In the conversation with the German branch of SkyWolff then revealed that he was thrilled at the idea of starting over with a new driver: “We have interesting options and conversations, for the short and long term. I'm looking forward to starting a new era in 2025 with another driver. Twelve years with Lewis have been incredible, but now we need to renewthe”. As is known, Mercedes is currently stalling, waiting for Max Verstappen's decision, keeping alive the paths that lead to Carlos Sainz and the courageous promotion of Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
