There IM L6 it is the first electric car on the market to adopt one solid state battery which should guarantee greater autonomy 1,000 kilometers (according to the Chinese CLTC cycle). This vehicle, of Chinese origin produced by IM Motors linked to the SAIC group, will be launched on the market in May and will arrive in Europe next year during 2025.
Solid state battery on the IM L6
The IM Motors L6 130 kWh battery features a cathode coated with a material with a high content of nickel and an anode composed of a containing base silicon-carbon.
The electrolyte, solid rather than liquid as in traditional batteries, was patented and developed on nanometric scaleusing an integrated molding a dry solid layer. After numerous tests, IM Motors claims that the electrolyte, distributed throughout the structure, has ahigh ionic conductivity and notable resistance to high temperatures.
Duration
The solid state battery has been tested in extreme conditions of temperature, demonstrating a low probability of fire of the cells. Furthermore, quadruple protection technology has been implemented to ensure the safety of the batteries, including a thermal insulation specific.
The IM Motors L6 battery, thanks to the dry solid layer, reduces internal resistance, allowing a recharge quick up to 900V. This solid layer helps contain the expansion of the silicon-based materials, ensuring excellent performance during charging and discharging cycles of the battery.
IM Motors L6 features
The first model from IM Motors is a E-segment sedanbased on a completely new platform a 800Vwith advanced technological solutions for driver assistance based on Lidargiving a detailed reconstruction of the road reality.
From a technical point of view, the car, equipped with an active chassis and four-wheel steering, offers variants with one engine (with power up to 408 HP) and variants with four-wheel drive with a total power of 787 HP. The solid-state battery has a 900-volt architecture, allowing for recharges of up to 400 kW and an increase in 400 km of autonomy in 12 minutes of charging. The battery, although defined as solid state, still contains a electrolyte which makes it similar to a semi-solid battery, like the one used by No.
Price, how much does the electric car with the solid state battery cost
IM Motors has opened pre-orders for the L6, available in three variants: Standard Max at 230,000 yuan (29,600 euros), High Performance at 299,900 yuan (38,600 euros) and Lightyear Max at 330,000 yuan (42,500 euros), with the latter equipped with the solid-state battery.
Electric cars with solid state battery
The IM Motors L6 may lay claim to the title of the first electric car with a solid-state battery, but it will soon be joined on the market by other electric cars with the same type of battery. Another Chinese automaker, Baoya, announced the Baoya FB77, a sedan with a Pininfarina design, with a range of 600 kilometers, less than that of the IM Motors L6. Also other car manufacturers like Toyota, Nissan, VolkswagenNio are working on the development of solid-state batteries.
Among the disadvantages of solid-state batteries are: high production costs (almost double compared to a traditional lithium battery with liquid electrolyte) which also influence sales prices. As a result, cars equipped with this technology may have higher costswhich may initially hinder sales.
