Rough landing in Vilnius. An Airbus A320 comes off the runway. A video shows the plane digging through the mud.
Vilnius – muddy area next to the runway. The shock must have sunk into the bones of the 179 passengers on the Airbus A320. When landing in Vilnius, the plane suddenly went off the runway and swerved through the mud.
Plane veers off runway: swerve can even be seen on flight data
The charter flight with registration LY-NVL took off from Bergamo on February 3rd and reached its destination in Lithuania at the scheduled time. This is shown by data from Flightradar24. But you can also see a clear swerve on the runway. While rolling out, the Airbus skidded into the grass, broadcaster LRT also reported.
No one was injured in the incident at 2:20 p.m., but it still had consequences. Operations at the airport were suspended until 5 p.m., writes Aerotelegraph. Photos and videos show that the weather conditions were anything but easy. This doesn't have to deter modern aircraft, however, landings are also successful on frozen runways.
“Pretty wild”: Photos and videos show Airbus off-roading in Vilnius
“This is pretty wild,” writes a man who posted a video and pictures of the Airbus’ failed landing on X (Twitter). He is impressed that the plane didn't give up in the mud but kept going. “It's one thing for an A320 to go off the runway in Vilnius, but for it to power itself out of it and not tip over. Off-roading with a commercial aircraft?” The video of an Airbus tipping over went viral not long ago.
Dirty but safe: Airbus comes to a standstill on the runway after a muddy excursion
Numerous pictures are circulating on social media that show how deep the Airbus had gotten into the quagmire. The mud sprays meters high, extending beyond the aircraft's wings. In the end it remains a little dirty but safe in the landing zone.
It is currently unknown what caused the trip into the grass. Airline Avion Express has not yet commented. One thing is certain: the images are spectacular, but no one was injured in the slip. (moe)
