With videosRoxeanne Hazes (29) has garnered praise from both colleagues and viewers tonight with her two performances in the duet episode of best singers. She let go of the ’emo adolescent’ in herself for two slightly alternative rock songs alongside Nielson and Jaap Reesema and casually gave presenter Jan Smit a lesson in music history. ,,It was fantastic.”

The duet edition of the NPO hit has been a guarantee for goosebumps, tears and hits for years. Think of Floor Jansen and Henk Poort who let their colleagues kick back with Phantom of the OperaTania Kross who created a grand version of with Tommie Christiaan Barcelona and of course Emma Heesters and Rolf Sanchez who scored with Dad Olvidarte.
No, such pieces of TV and music history did not pass by tonight. But the colleagues and viewers did enjoy it, especially Roxeanne Hazes. When Nielson was allowed to choose a duet partner, he immediately knew he wanted to sing with her. He chose as a song I’m with you by Avril Lavigne from 2002, according to him a modern evergreen for ’emo adolescents’, in other words a bit of alternative young people. “I was a really bad emo teenager, still kind of,” said Roxeanne, who liked the song as a young girl.
According to colleague Blanks, Nielson and his team translated the text into Dutch and the result was worth it. ,,Wow, it was really fantastic”, he said afterwards. ,,I thought the best part was the moment that they entered the chorus together in two voices. Then I thought: yeah let’s go.” Tweeting viewers were also enthusiastic. “There’s the next hit from this series,” someone wrote in a tweet that quickly racked up dozens of likes.
bitter sweet what?
Then Hazes’ second duet was yet to come. With Jaap Reesema she sang one of her ‘all-time favorite songs’, Bitter sweet symphony by The Verve from 1997. She hadn’t yet said the title or the colleagues were already enthusiastic, but Jan Smit had no idea which song it was. “I only know Abba and John Denver,” he joked. The song by the British band, best known for the violin element, has been around the hundredth place in the Top 2000 for years.
At the first notes, Jan Smit recognized the track after all. ,,Bitter sweet symphony“I had never heard of it,” he said. ,,But then you hear the violin and you think: that’s that one.” Incidentally, the violin piece is not original by The Verve, but by The Beatles, Hazes and Reesema said. It led to surprised faces among colleagues. ,,If you don’t have any music knowledge…’, Jaap teased.
He doesn’t have that knowledge completely in order himself, because they meant The Rolling Stones. Andrew Oldham, the band’s former manager and producer, made an orchestral version of the song in 1965 The last time. The Verve song is based on a sample from that version with the violin sounds.
Anyway, Claudia de Breij was impressed by the best singers-version. ,,I thought Rox and Jaap were really fan-tas-tic”, she said. ,,Those two voices together, I thought it was very beautiful.” Ferdi Bolland already had a high regard for Reesema, but he has risen in his ‘very high’ regard. “A perfect vocalist.”
The duet edition is the last installment of this series. ‘What a great season this was’, is one of the many messages on Twitter, where the program trending topic used to be. ‘With Roxeanne Hazes as a discovery for me. What a beautiful voice!’
