Urbanism carries out works to prevent the fall of rubble, walls and downspouts in the face of the passivity of the owners, and has even thrown a block on Gloria street
Cleaning and fencing of lots, removal of elements from the façades at risk of detachment, removal of downpipes in poor condition, consolidation and reinforcement of walls and even the demolition of a building that threatened to collapse. These are some of the works carried out by the Cartagena City Council in buildings, homes and plots distributed throughout the municipality to guarantee the safety of the properties and avoid accidents to tenants and pedestrians, in the face of neglect on the part of the owners.
In the last two years, the Department of Urban Planning has carried out some 40 interventions through the so-called subsidiary execution procedure, by which it assumes the works and passes the bill to the owner. In total, these tasks have cost the municipal coffers 283,000.
The last two files, promoted by the local administration this week, will allow to act in the block located at number 20 Duque Street, in the historic center. Ending the danger of rubble falling onto public roads will cost 2,289.54 euros. In the case of another façade, in this case located at 25 Calle Peroniño, the municipal technicians have decreed “the revision, the chopping and the consolidation”, with a budget of 6,527.95 euros and an execution period of six days.
Abandonment and illegalities
One of the most striking interventions this year has been the demolition of the building that occupied the plot of Calle Gloria 7, behind the Regional Museum of Modern Art (Muram). The officials declared it in a state of ruin and, as it also had tenants, it was necessary to act quickly. “It had residents inside and it was in a very dangerous state, explained Urban Planning sources.
The area councilor and deputy mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, stressed that this type of demolition of abandoned buildings, as well as those of illegally erected buildings, guarantee compliance with the regulations and prevent accidents. To this they also contribute, said the mayor, the perimeter fences, the repairs of cornices, the revision and sanitation and the consolidation of facades.
«The City Council is in charge of executing these works due to the inaction of their owners and based on the urgency that each of these files collect. In any case, the legitimate owners will have to pay the amount of the works ”, warned the deputy mayor.
Invasions and mining pits
When asked by THE TRUTH, the government team indicated that among the interventions carried out in 2020 and in 2021 there are demolition works in San Antonio and Francisco Jorquera streets, in Santa Lucía, as well as in Casas del Caete, Subida to the Cabezo de Los Mateos, Rincón de Tallante and Prefumo (Barrio Peral). An irregularly occupied public area in La Manga was also cleared.
Likewise, the Consistory repaired facades in Churruca, San Fernando, Submarino, Peroniño, Gloria, Duque, Canales and Beatas streets. And he did different jobs on Enrique Granados Street, El Bohío, Santa Florentina, El Palmero and Canteras. It also sealed a mining shaft in Cala Dorada and fenced another in the vicinity of El Gorguel beach.
