An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck near the Kuril Islands in the Russian Far East. The Geophysical Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement that it had detected an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale at a depth of 40 km and 208 km from the city of Severo-Korilsk in the Russian Far East.
“No material or human damage was recorded,” the statement added.
