About 40 people arrive in Dover in two boats after the deadly shipwreck that occurred on Wednesday
The French security forces have arrested five individuals for their alleged responsibility in the trafficking of persons through the English Channel, hours after at least 27 migrants and refugees lost their lives in a shipwreck that has once again raised the tension between London and Paris, on account of the responsibility that both have in this type of tragedy.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, agree that it is necessary to do everything possible to combat the mafias that operate in the area, but the British side ugly to the gala that does not prevent the output of boats. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told RTL that France had “saved” 7,800 people this year.
Pending contacts between the two governments, London has proposed joint patrols and is examining legal changes that would affect asylum seekers and raise penalties against human trafficking. About 40 people arrived early Thursday in two boats to Dover, according to the BBC public radio.
“France must stop being the only one fighting traffickers,” said Darmanin, who has described what happened as an “absolute tragedy.” Despite the fact that initially the Ministry itself had reported more than thirty fatalities, finally the official balance has been lowered to 27, of which 17 were men, seven women – one of them pregnant – and three children.
Darmanin, who has confirmed that two other people – of Somali and Iraqi origin, according to Franceinfo – are admitted in critical condition due to hypothermia, has highlighted the speed with which the Lille Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigations. Five people have already been arrested, including one who would have bought the boats in Germany, the minister said.
In the absence of including the latest victims in its count, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) had already registered at least 15 deaths this year on the migration route that crosses the English Channel, with more than 160 deaths if the data collected since 2014.
