Surprisingly, you can hardly call the arrival of the VW ID.5. Volkswagen already disseminated a lot of information and already let us test drive a prototype of the four-wheel drive GTX sports version, still under some camouflage tape. Meanwhile, the VW ID.5 has thrown off its disguise, so that we can admire the electric SUV coupe of the Volkswagen ID.4 in full regalia. The visual differences are not great: the front gets a somewhat sharper design, although the Volkswagen ID.5 mainly revolves around the sloping rear. Not only does that swooping roofline create a slimmer silhouette, it also lowers the drag coefficient from 0.28 to 0.26.
The Volkswagen group will soon be doing this trick again with an SUV coupe based on the Skoda Enyaq iV. The Audi Q4 E-Tron also gets a Sportback derivative.
A little longer, a little lower
The body of the electric Volkswagen ID.5, which is built on the modular MEB platform, retains the proportions of the VW ID.4, but is slightly longer and lower. The rear passengers lose 12 millimeters of headroom, but thanks to the unchanged wheelbase of 2,766 mm, knee room remains the same. The boot volume of the VW ID.4 is 549 liters.
The drive unit is not taken over one-to-one. For example, the VW ID.5 will only be offered with the battery pack of 77 kWh, which results in a driving range between 480 and 520 kilometers. The AC charger is good for 11 kW, while on DC you can charge up to 135 kW at fast charging stations. In terms of motor, the choice is limited to the Pro, the Pro Performance and the GTX for the time being:
- VW ID.5 Pro: 128 kW/174 hp
- VW ID.5 Pro Performance: 150 kW/200 hp
- VW ID.5 GTX 4×4: 220 kW/299 hp
The Volkswagen ID.5 will debut in the spring of 2022. Prices will have to wait a while, but expect an additional cost of about 2,500 euros compared to a technically equivalent VW ID.4.
