2022 Fiat Tipo and 500X get hybrid powertrain

After the Panda and the 500 on petrol, the Tipo and the 500X also get a Hybrid label on their boot lid. As with the two city cars, however, this is only a mild hybrid system, in which a 15 kW belt-driven starter-alternator eases the work of the petrol engine.

In contrast to the 12-volt system in the Fiat Panda and 500 Hybrid, it works on 48 volts in the 500X and Tipo. The petrol engine is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 130 hp and 240 Nm, which is mated to a seven-speed, robotic dual-clutch gearbox.

In fact, it is the same drive unit that will also be available in the recently unveiled Alfa Romeo Tonale† Like its cousin from Milan, both Fiats will also be able to move purely electrically at walking speeds or when maneuvering, which is exceptional for mild hybrids.

On paper, the SUV and the compact mid-sized car can therefore boast lower WLTP standard consumption than the respective diesel versions, i.e. 4.7 l/100 km for the Tipo (versus 5.0 for the 1.6 MultiJet) and 5.1 l/ 100 km for the 500X (versus 5.4).

The Tipo and 500X Hybrid accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 and 9.4 seconds respectively, but the electric motor mainly helps to improve the response at low revs. The Fiat Tipo and 500X Hybrid will initially be offered as RED and can be ordered in that special version from now on; the first deliveries are scheduled for April.
