2021 saw the lowest number of bankruptcies in more than thirty years
In 2021 1,536 companies went bankrupt, the lowest number in 31 years. That reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Wednesday. Since the institute’s bankruptcy measurements began in 1981, fewer companies went bankrupt in 1990 alone: 1,527. Last year, 43 percent fewer companies went bankrupt than in 2020, when the number of bankruptcies (2,073) also reached an all-time low.
According to the CBS, the fact that fewer companies were declared bankrupt during corona cannot be seen separately from the government’s emergency support packages. A few of the aid packages were discontinued on October 1, shortly after the release of a large number of corona measures. The caretaker cabinet scrapped, among other things, the NOW wage scheme, the compensation of fixed costs TVL and the self-employed allowance Tozo. Nevertheless, the number of bankruptcies hardly increased in the following months. Most of these aid packages have been reintroduced with the announcement of the severe lockdown in December.
Fewer catering bankruptcies
The fall in the number of bankruptcies was most noticeable in the trade sector, where in 2021 about half the number of companies went bankrupt than in 2020. The number of bankruptcies also fell in the retail, wholesale and car trade. Fewer companies in the hospitality industry went bankrupt than in the previous year. Then the number increased.
Statistics Netherlands only registers bankruptcies of companies, not of natural persons. As a result, the institute registered fewer bankruptcies than Dutch courts ruled: the Council for the Judiciary announced on Tuesday that judges pronounced 2,346 bankruptcies last year. Sole proprietorships are included in these statistics.
