Law enforcement officers seized 150,000 electronic cigarettes dangerous to life and health in Moscow. This was announced on Thursday, July 14 by the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Irina Volk.
“Employees of the Department of Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Moscow detained six people, three of whom are citizens of foreign states. They are suspected of storing and selling products that do not meet safety requirements, committed by a group of people,” Volk said.
Attackers, according to preliminary data, were able to organize a channel for the supply of large quantities of electronic devices to the capital. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation noted that the 41-year-old suspect has been engaged in this business with accomplices since 2007.
The devices were imported into Russia through East Asia under the guise of small household appliances, and for their legalization they used fake accompanying documents and quality certificates. Electronic cigarettes were sold through online stores and supplied to commercial enterprises.
After examining the devices, it turned out that the amount of nicotine in them significantly exceeds that stated on the packaging, and this poses a danger to the life and health of consumers. During the preliminary investigation, all victims, including minors, will be identified.
A criminal case was opened against the suspects.
On July 6, it became known that every seventh electronic cigarette and every tenth e-liquid in 2021 was produced in the territory of the Russian Federation clandestinely. This conclusion was made by the Union of Manufacturers of the Industry of Nicotine-Containing Products (SPINI). Director of SPIN Dmitry Vladimirov said that due to the lack of necessary control, the black market is expanding more and more every year.
On June 28, the Higher School of Economics reported that in 2021, almost 100% of all electronic cigarettes sold in the Russian Federation and 68% of liquids for refilling them were illegal products.
