During the morning conference chaired by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Zoé Robledo, director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), launched accusations against the retirement fund administrators (Afores)pointing out that they have not delivered more than 30 billion pesos to that institution, coming from retirement accounts not claimed by the workers.
Robledo stated that the Afores have the responsibility of depositing the money from the inactive accounts in the IMSS, entity in charge of safeguarding individual housing subaccounts.
According to the official, these administrators have only returned 946 million of the 34 thousand that they had to deliver at the end of 2023.
The reform to the Social Security Law promoted by Morena in Congress seeks to create a pension fund for workers who retire with salaries of less than 10 thousand pesos.
With this initiative, the money from inactive accounts will be used to create the Welfare Pension Fund, in contrast to the current law, where a part of these resources was allocated to the IMSS reserve.
Robledo highlighted that this reserve generated interest for the Insurance, but could not be used to subsidize the supplement until it reached 100 percent of the last salary of people who retired with less than 10 thousand pesos.
The initiative aims to cover this gap, benefiting those who retire with amounts lower than that amount.
The director of the IMSS mentioned the specific case of Afore Azteca, where there are 7,000 unclaimed accounts with a total amount of 1,790 million pesos, of which only 19 million have been returned.
Robledo responded to criticism of the initiative, describing it as misinformation, and cited a Citi bank manager, although without mentioning his name, who supposedly stated that the only novelty of the reform is that the resources from inactive accounts go to the IMSS. to a trust administered by the Bank of Mexico.
The president, for his part, mentioned in previous days that the Afores are reluctant to deliver 40 billion pesos of unclaimed savings by people over 70 years of age.
