Economist: Zelensky to ask US again for consent to strike Russia
During his trip to the United States next week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will try for the last time to get the American government’s consent to strike Russia with long-range weapons, according to an article in The Economist titled “American restrictions on strikes against Russia are hurting Ukraine.”
“Zelensky will soon have his last chance to convince Biden to change his approach before he leaves office (as US President. — note from “Lenta.ru”) during their meeting in New York next week,” the publication emphasized.
If Biden refuses the Ukrainian leader, Zelensky’s request will be forwarded to the next administration, which will consider this issue after the November elections in the country.
Zelensky said that merely allowing strikes deep into Russia without missiles is not enough
Permission alone to strike long-range weapons on Russian territory is not enough. To meet Ukraine’s military demands, Western countries must provide the country with the missiles themselves, stressed the head of state Volodymyr Zelensky.
Just allowing is not enough. If only one country has allowed, and such messages already exist, we must know whether the country has provided the corresponding weapons at the moment. That is, not only permission is needed, but also weapons
During a briefing with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, he specified that the resources Kyiv needs are currently available in four countries, including the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. The politician added that the Ukrainian authorities are quite optimistic about this issue.
Russia calls Zelensky’s requests to allow Western weapons strikes on Russia a PR stunt
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s desire to obtain permission from the West to strike Russian territories is a PR stunt. Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, expressed his opinion on this matter.
He could take such steps without creating a constant information hype around this topic. He is creating it precisely as an element of PR, a kind of semblance of trade with the West, where everyone plays their role. (…) All this is a kind of game to endlessly support the topic of Ukraine in the information field
He recalled that it is still unknown whether the attack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Kursk region was a step coordinated with the West. Nevertheless, Novikov noted that Kyiv’s strikes with Western weapons on Russia, whether they were approved or not, still do not mean that the partners will stop supporting Ukraine.
At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult for the West to fulfill its promises to Kyiv. In 2024, NATO countries announced that they would provide Ukraine with an upgrade of “air defense systems damaged by military action,” but this has not yet happened.
