Works in progress
These are difficult times for the European circuits which already host Formula 1 Grand Prix. The expansion of international applications and the decision of the top management of the Circus to do not go beyond nine to ten races a year on tracks on the Old Continent it makes competition fierce to keep a place in the sun. So even the home track of the current master of F1 – Max Verstappen – is not sure it will be able to host the premier category of motorsport for much longer.
There Zandvoort track he recorded record numbers in terms of public attendance starting from its return to the calendar – dated 2021 – with gods constant sold-outs. Yet the circuit's contract with Formula 1, which will expire at the end of the 2025 season, has not yet been renewed although negotiations have been ongoing for some time. As with other historic facilities, the future of Zandvoort is also linked to gods modernization works considered essential by F1.
Future still to be defined
In the viewfinder, in particular, there is very narrow pit lane of the route for which expansion works are already underway. In this regard, the episode of the 2022 GP is famous, when Sergio Perez drove his car over a tire fixing gun from the Ferrari team due to the excessively narrow spaces in the pit lane. The head of the Zandvoort circuitRobert van Overdijkspoke on the radio ZFM Zandvoort of these interventions explaining that “The FOM and the FIA made it clear that if we wanted to continue to be on the calendar we would have to solve the problem”.
“We are not an oil state, where contracts can easily be extended for ten or twelve yearsthe – added van Overdijk regarding the long negotiations for the renewal – we need a few more months before we can make this decision. But it's clear that FOM would like to continue coming here and this type of investment they are not done short term“. So at the moment the chance that Zandvoort will continue to host the Dutch GP even after 2025 are still high.
