In what might sound like déjà vu, Yuji Naka, co-creator of sonic the hedgehoghas been arrested once again for using confidential information from Square Enixand buy shares in the study that was in charge of developing Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.
According to a report by AsahiNaka, as well as Taisuke Sazaki, a former Square Enix employee, were arrested for allegedly investing in ATeam Entertainmentthis under the non-public knowledge of the future plans that those responsible for Final Fantasy had to work with the studio on the mobile game that we eventually came to know as Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.
It is mentioned here that Naka found out about Square Enix’s plans to develop the game with ATeam before its official announcement. Thus, the person responsible for Balan Wonderworld bought about 120 thousand shares of the company, at a total price of around ¥144.7 million yen, or $834 thousand dollars.
For now, Square Enix has not issued a statement related to this incident.. However, when Naka was first arrested a couple of weeks ago, the Japanese company commented as follows:
“Today, some news outlets reported that former Square Enix employees were under investigation for suspected insider trading.
We have been fully cooperating with requests from the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission. As the investigation by the Tokyo District Prosecutor’s Office is ongoing, we will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation.
We are deeply sorry for the great concern this has caused everyone involved. We have dealt with this incident strictly, including internal disciplinary measures taken against the suspected employees.”
Currently, it is unknown how severe Yuji Naka’s punishment will be, especially considering this is his second arrest on the same charge. On related topics, you can learn more about Naka’s first arrest here. Similarly, the developer sued Square Enix for Balan Wonderworld.
Editor’s Note:
This already seems like a joke. Considering the situation, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is repeated in the future with another Square Enix mobile game. It’s a pity that someone as important as Yuji Naka is giving people something to talk about in this way.
