YouTube Shorts is quickly emerging as a powerful earning tool for creators, many of whom may end up preferring it to TikTok.
The Shorts platform was launched by YouTube as a competitor to TikTok in 2021 and introduced the sharing of profits in early 2023.
Just over a year after the launch of creator compensation, Shorts' impact on the short video sector is now becoming significant, with a large number of channels admitted to the Partner Program and therefore marked “on the company's payroll” .
Currently, YouTube has over 3 million creators worldwide and is estimated to be hundreds of thousands those who are already benefiting from earnings from the platform.
Income opportunities
The advertisements on Shorts, distributed between videos within the feed, involve a different revenue sharing structure than longer content on YouTube.
Here, revenue is aggregated and divided among eligible creators based on criteria such as views and music licensing; an agreement considered more profitable than traditional “creator funds”, according to what the company declared.
While it's difficult to determine exactly how much creators of short videos on Shorts earn compared to other forms of monetization on the platform, YouTube said it has provided well 70 billion dollars to the creators over the last three years.
Short, but attractive
Shorts' growth potential could intensify further in the months ahead as TikTok, which has competed with YouTube for longer videos, faces a possible threat of a ban in the United States.
While there is no certainty of this scenario, it is very likely that YouTube will welcome former TikTok users and creators if this were to occur.
80% of creators who met the requirements with their short videos are also taking advantage of other monetization features YouTube offers, such as fan funding and on-platform shopping.
It has been estimated that over 25% of channels in the Partner Program can now generate revenue through videos, thus highlighting the success and appreciation of this form of content within the creator community.
